Defense of the Ancients FAQ

Q: Who's the creator of DoTA?
A: Eul is the sole creator of DoTA. Kegsta, Sesshoumaru, and Kaye- have all helped edit various versions

Q: What is the point of Defense of the Ancients?
A. To take control of a single hero and destroy the opposing computer-controlled base. As you attempt to destroy the enemy base, other player-controlled heros from the other team will often try to kill you. Each hero has different skill types, and is played a different way.

Q: What was the first version of DoTA and what was it based on?
A: Defense of the Ancients Beta 2 was the very first DOTA. and was initially based on the concept of Aeon of Strife (AoS) however with the addition of custom skins, spells, and new hero concepts. This proved to be widely popular and the new map was an overnight success. However, DOTA Beta 2 was plauged with balance issues and soon, DOTA ver 1.0 was released.

Q: What are the latest versions of DoTA?
A: For Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, the latest is Defense of the Ancients: 3.6.

Q: Where can I get the latest DOTA map version?
A: Should you have problems downloading the current version of the map off of b.net, we recommend checking the "sticky" topic at the top of this forum. All you need to do is save the map to your Warcraft III "Maps" file under the subfolder "Download". Please check your computer's pathing for help with this.
Direct Link:
DoTA 3.6

Q: I downloaded the map and all, but I still do not have it! You lied! Now die!
A: You received the file "zipped". Go to the maps section manually, and double click on the folder that seems to be next to the maps. Inside is the actual map. Copy and paste, my friend.

Q: What about all these other maps circulating with DoTA in their name?
A: Only maps created by Eul are official DoTA maps. Accept no substitutes! Official DoTA maps have names like the following:
Defense of the Ancients 1.0
Defense of the Ancients Beta 2
Defense of the Ancients 2.1 - 2.9
Defense of the Ancients Final BETA
Defense of the Ancients FB2 - FB6
Defense of the Ancients Classic 1.0 - 1.54
DOTA DX 1.0 - 1.4 (discontinued)
DoTA: AE - AE4
DoTA: Autumnus
DoTA: 3.0 - 3.6

Q: I want to play DOTA 3.6 but i have TFT installed. I've heard you can play DOTA 3.6 even after you install the TFT expansion. How?
A: You can either create a shortcut for each application some where convenient, or you can go to the WC3 folder each time to manually double-click the icon.

Q: What's this about a TFT only DOTA?
A: Eul and Song have finished Thirst of Gamma (TFG), the second installment of Defense of the Ancients. Currently editing TFG is Cidolfas. To learn more about this map, visit the TFG Forum

Q: What is a server split?
A: It is when players 1-6 see player 7-10 leave, and players 7-10 see players 1-6 leave. In actuality though, nobody leaves. This is just one case though, there may be other balances, as in only one person leaves. This is often characterized by massive messages saying players have left at the same time. Whenever I am the victim of server split I see a screen that says everyone else is lagging before I split. To see the causes of the server split, check here.

Q: Who is the hero in the middle of the map and how do I complete the quest? who is Morbazan? How do i get the flux staff?
A: His name is Morbazan, Eldritch of Oblivion. Walking up to him three times with a Void Stone, Oblivion Staff, and Null Chain in your inventory (Do NOT insert the items into Morbazan's inventory) rewards you with a secret item, Morbazan's Flux Staff. This item has the following properties; +5 all stats, +50% mana regen, +300 mana. Any player can complete this quest once.

Q: My hero is too weak! What can I do to make him/her better?
A. A common way to get rid of hero weakness is to get items to make them better. For example, the Undead's "Tormented Soul" hs horrendous HP, making him a prime target for nuking. However, there are several items that can be bought that will raise this value, and make him more resilient. Try many item combinations to find your hero's ideal one!

Q: What happens after my hero dies?
A: You will respawn with full health and some mana after you die. The time to respawn is 8 seconds multiplied by your character level; so 8 seconds at level 1, 80 seconds at level 10. (Do not leave because you died. It weakens your team.)
You also lose gold upon death at the rate of 50 gold per character level; so 50 gold at level 1, 500 gold at level 10. If you are certain you cannot escape death, try to quickly transfer your gold to teammates using the Allies menu (F11). Later, ask them to transfer back to you.
You do not lose items or experience when dying.
If one player kills another player's hero, they recieve 100 bonus gold (for a total of 141). (Excluded are kills via Touch of Death.)

Q: Can I repick my hero?
A: No. If you're having trouble with your current hero, ask your team for advice on using him.

Q: Do boots of agility, gloves of haste or damage boosting items carry over through the Phantom Lancer's Ultimate?
A: No. Boots of agility, gloves of haste, and damage boosting items DO NOT carry over through the lancers ultimate.

Q: How does the Omniknight's Purification work?
A: Purification is based off of Frost Nova. This spell is hardcoded so that the splash damage is calculated first, then the target damage. The splash damage does not affect friendly units.
The spell is coded like this:
LVL1 - (-200) target damage, 100 splash damage
LVL2 - (-300) target damage, 150 splash damage
LVL3 - (-400) target damage, 200 splash damage
The thing about purification is that:
-When cast on a friendly unit, splash damage is ignored, and it heals the target unit for 200/300/400 hp or heal 150/225/300 hp for heroes.
-If cast on a enemy unit, it will die when it has 100/150/200 hp (75/113/150 for heroes) or less. It will be healed for 100/150/200 (75/112/150 for heroes) when they have more hp.

Q: How does the Demon Magess's Mind Ravel Work?
A: Mind Ravel is based on Fountain of Mana, which is reversed to drain mana instead of restore it. The spell will not work while an NE hero has full mana. The amount of mana drained is (.33%)/(.66%)/1% per second.
So, an NE hero with 1000 mp within the radius of a Demon Magess with level 3 Mind Ravel will have 10 mana drained per second.

Q: How does evasion work with bladeturn necklaces?
A: There has been a lot of confusion with evasion, bladeturn necklaces, and stacking. As was proven by a group of TWC forum members in individual tests, evasion and blade turn necklaces do not stack. View the full thread here.

Q: I can't watch a replay I saved. Why?
A: Blizzard released a new patch for Warcraft III. The replay is incompatible as it was made with a previous version. To view these replays, you need to use Warcraftzei.
Also, if you don't have map that the replay was played on, it will not work.

Q: My spell says it does 200 damage, but that guy had 190 and still lived! What gives?
A: Spell damage is affected by Hero Resistance when you cast it on a hero, which means that it is reduced by 25%. So a 100 damage spell will do only 75 damage to a Hero. Spells do the full damage that it says on normal units.

Q: What spells are unaffected by spell resistance/anti-magic?
A: Drain Life, Astral Protection, Death Sentry, and Diabolic Edict pass through spell immunity. Drain Life is affected by hero spell damage reduction (heroes take only 75% damage from spells). Astral Protection, Death Sentry and Diabolic Edict are normal (non-magic) attacks and thus reduced by armor. Plague Spear and epidemic are also immune to ams.
Magic Immuntiy does not protect against the enemy buffing his attack with critical strike, inner fire, call of the wild, battle cry, rampage, etc.
Hero spell damage reduction is not applied for Touch of Death and Decompose, because they are based of 'friendly' buffs.
Also, Holy Light and Death Coil are hardcoded to pass through an allies' magic immunity.
All auras work through magic immunity.

Q: There are a TON of abbreviations on this forum! What do they mean?
A: DOTA list of Abbreviations:

AOE = Area of Effect
AOL = Ancient of Lore (produces Dryads for Night Elf)
AOS = Aeon of Strife (an old map [I think it originated with Starcraft], the idea for which inspired DotA and literally hundreds of other custom maps)

Should be changed to:
Q: Do boots of agility, gloves of haste or damage boosting items carry over through the Phantom Lancer's Ultimate?
A: Bonuses given through stats increase carry over to the images. Aditionally HP and mana boosts also increase the images' HP and mana, and increased move speed will also carry over. Any other bonus (damage, IAS, armor) does NOT affect images.
All the above is also valid for the Aquasoul's decoy.
Thanks to Evincar for pointing this :P

1.17 will also allow +damage to carry to images.

That is only half true.

The patch gives the option in the World Editor to choose what transfers.

What actually transfers in DoTa will not be changed by the patch, it will stay the same.

In some versions +dmg carries over and in some versions it doesn't.

I'm too lazy to find them all and link them, so click Boombastic's profile and scroll down to his signature. The current versions are linked there.
